Javier Ballester, M.D. Junior Scholar


Javier Ballester, MD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry the University of Utah. He completed his first residency in Psychiatry at Universidad Autonoma de Madrid and after being awarded a scholarship from the Psychiatry and Mental Health Spanish Foundation, he spent four months in Canada at McMaster University where he investigated brain regions involved in compulsivity in an animal model of OCD.

After his arrival to the USA, Dr. Ballester spent three years in Pittsburgh (PA) learning Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, with economical support from the Spanish Alicia Koplowitz Foundation. Product of that scholarship, he participated in clinical research studying the longitudinal course of aggression in people with bipolar disorder. He then decided to repeat a residency in Psychiatry at Yale University where he also finished an Addiction Fellowship. His most recent honors include having participated in the American Psychiatric Association-Mind Games final in 2016, and being awarded a Ruth Fox scholarship in 2017 from the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
