Vijay Ramchandani, Ph.D. Alumni (1999 - 2001)

Biography

Vijay Ramchandani obtained his undergraduate degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Bombay University in India in 1990, and his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA in 1996. From 1996 to 2002, he worked at the Alcohol Research Center at Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, IN, first as a Research Associate and then as an Assistant Scientist and Part-time Assistant Professor. In 2003, he joined NIAAA as a Staff Scientist in the Laboratory of Clinical and Translational Studies, and in 2007, he became Chief of the newly-formed Unit on Human Physiology and Pharmacokinetics. He also holds an affiliate faculty position in the Department of Pharmaceutics in the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy in Richmond, VA.

Vijay conducts research on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of alcohol in humans. His current research focuses on evaluating the influence of genetic and environmental factors on alcohol metabolism and CNS effects in humans.

As a past member of the Alcohol Medical Scholars Program, Vijay was active in the effort to improve education about alcohol and substance abuse at Indiana University School of Medicine. His lecture on the pharmacology of alcohol was taught to medical students during their chemical dependency rotation, enhancing their training in the diagnosis and treatment of alcohol-dependent patients. After moving to NIAAA, Vijay has continued to remain interested in educational activities. He is a member of the NIH Speakers Bureau and lectures 4-6 times a year about alcohol pharmacology to audiences ranging from middle-school and high-school students to health care professionals in government agencies.
